Flynt, the professed atheist, has now met his Maker. Atheist no more.
Brothers, sisters, come on down to that river
Guaranteed you'll never be the same
There's a fountain flowing from the heart of the Savior
Bring your sins and all your guilty stains
Let that river of life wash it all away

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

@mountaineer

I am honestly surprised he wasn't at least 10 years older. He must have been born with a golden spoon in his mouth to have started up a magazine so young.

Good riddance.
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

Why the hostility? Flint was a butthole, but he never forced anyone to buy his magazine or anything else he sold.
.
I did pick up one of his mags that was laying around in the 70's,and was so grossed out I have never been temped to even glance at one again. IIRC,it was a cartoon titled "Chester, the Molester" that did it for me.

Seeing that one magazine issue had a positive effect on me,though. I knew from that day forward that anyone who subscribed or liked to read that magazine was never going to be a friend of mine.

In other words,it served a useful purpose as a filter. Knowing someone like the mag was all the information I needed to know about that person.

Because he was a vile and hateful man, and has nothing to do with his magazine, then again it was a reflection of the man.

I agree with you about the mag, but I saw it for what it was, as much of the media of the day that proclaimed itself "edgy". It was the beginning of desensitizing Americans toward what was commonly referred to as "sick" (nothing good about it). People who liked it were not the sort I ran with either.

The unfortunate effect Flint had of taking obscenity laws out of play was that the ordinary borders of decency and acceptability were trashed by making the line harder to define than ever in a legal sense, and morally, society suffers still.

I'm no prude, by any stretch, but even in my bad old days, there were things that just were not done.

Now they are the subject of news stories, but chivalry had to be crushed to let the man hate in, the sickos out, and the Feminazis loose.

Frankly,I don't give a damn about any lines someone else draws. I draw my own line, and do my best to stay on the "right" side of it. Everyone else can  do whatever they want,as long as you don't physically attack me or mine, but rest assured that if you step over MY line in my presence,I will make you aware of it.

Even in the "bad new days of today, there  are things that are just not done in my presence without me speaking out,and taking action to stop it,if that becomes necessary. I am talking about the basic things any civilized society REQUIRES for us all to live together as civilized human beings, and not barbarians. Things like people being able to walk the streets and live their normal lives without being in fear of being attacked, threatened,or abused in any other way. Especially women and children, and the elderly.

This may not be PC in today's modern world, but I don't really give a rabid rats ass. I live in MY world.

No hostility, just a response to what Flynt chose to be and what he did to US culture (not that he was alone).

Just a reminder:  This is the Obituaries thread.  It would be fine to create a new thread where y'all can discuss how Larry Flynt damaged the country, or not.

TIA.

@sneakypete To me he was the rock bottom of an industry that was already at a low point. He used and hid behind the 1st amendment not for a social or philosophical good but purely to make a profit. He went beyond objectifying to exploiting. This is strictly my opinion and I don't demand or expect that others will either share it or agree with it.

Chick Corea, Jazz Pianist Who Expanded the Possibilities of the Genre, Dead at 79

Quote

Chick Corea, the virtuosic keyboardist who broadened the scope of jazz during a career spanning more than five decades, died on Tuesday from a rare form of cancer. A post on his Facebook page confirmed the news. Corea was 79.

In the early Sixties, Corea established himself as an A-list pianist, working with Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, and others. Later in the decade, he joined Miles Davis’ band and played a key role in helping the trumpeter make the transition to a more contemporary, plugged-in sound on albums like Bitches Brew. Following his work with Davis, he formed his own groundbreaking electric band, Return to Forever, which played some of the most vibrant and dynamic music of the fusion era. In the ensuing decades, Corea threw himself into countless projects, showing off his limitless range — from a duo with vibraphonist Gary Burton to his trendsetting Elektric Band. His most recent album, the 2020 live solo disc Plays, showed off his wildly diverse skill set and body of influences, touching on classical pieces, bebop, and more.

It occurred to me yesterday while posting the above that the musicians I enjoyed in the 70s - whether early CCMers like Barry McGuire, Annie Herring, Nancy Henigbaum, and more or jazz fusion musicians like George Benson, Jean Luc Ponty, Earl Klugh, and Bob James - are all getting up there in years. McGuire is, IIRC, semi-retired and may soon be receiving the ultimate "higher".

Earl Klugh - theres a name I haven't heard for awhile. Lowride is a really good album IMO, and I'm not big on jazz.

Indeed. Hard to picture Annie Herring as being 75, or Ponty 78, but here we are.  9999what

Holy cow! Bob James was born in 1939, and Jean Luc Ponty in 1942. Barry McGuire was born in 1935 and George Benson in 1943.

The rest I listed are Baby-Boomers (Annie Herring, barely, though Nelly Ward Greisen and Matthew Ward definitely are).
