New COVID variant reaches Germany from UK

A woman who flew from London to Frankfurt this weekend was carrying the new, more infectious coronavirus variant, German officials have said. Meanwhile, Denmark identified 33 people infected with the mutated virus.

German authorities on Thursday confirmed the presence of the  new coronavirus variant  on German soil, adding to fears that the it could start spreading beyond the UK and South Africa.

A woman who flew in from London Heathrow this Sunday tested positive at the Frankfurt airport. Further genetic analysis of the sample at a lab in Berlin identified a case of B.1.1.7, as the variant is known, said authorities in the German state of Baden-Württenberg in a statement.

"It is the first known case in Germany," they said.

The woman, who flew to Germany to visit family, was picked up from the airport by relatives and has isolated at the family's home in Baden-Wuerttemberg since then, the state's health ministry said.

France uncovers mutant, fast-moving COVID-19 strains

Mutant strains of COVID-19 that are more contagious, but less serious, have turned up in France, possibly explaining why Europe is reporting a spike in confirmed cases.

The chief of a leading French research hospital revealed the discovery to French lawmakers last week, the Sunday Times of London reported.

Microbiologist Didier Raoult, who heads IHU Méditerranée Infection in Marseilles, told senators that the hospital’s infectious disease experts found seven coronavirus mutations during an analysis of COVID-19 tests over the summer.

Key Facts

Four people in Madrid who recently arrived from the U.K. were infected with the new coronavirus variation, the region’s deputy health chief Antonio Zapatero announced Saturday, but said “there is no need for alarm,” according to Al Jazeera, adding that none of the patients are seriously ill.

According to Reuters, a traveler from the U.K. in Sweden tested positive for the new strain, the country’s health agency announced Saturday.

France and Lebanon also said Friday that travelers from London had tested positive for the new variant.

Mutant strains of COVID-19 that are more contagious, but less serious, have turned up in France,

Based on Hopkins data, as of today the Mortality Rate for the entire pandemic for the United States stands at 1.76%

If this strain is truly "less serious", aren't we really getting into seasonal flu territory?

The Mortality Rate for the entire pandemic for the United States stands at 1.76% for those testing positive.

There are several times more persons who at some point would have tested positive, but who exhibited no symptoms at the time.

Which would mean that the Mortality Rate is even smaller.

Same as the flu.  Virus do not effect everyone the same way.

Much smaller.  As a general rule, divide by 6.

And if you split it up by age group, that number plummets for people under 65.
