Storm produces white Christmas, power outages in East

A cold front on the backside of the storm swept across the eastern U.S. on Thursday night, replacing the mild and wet weather with Arctic air and a bit of snow.

Temperatures on Friday morning were 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit lower than they were to start the day on Thursday. This translated to low temperatures in the 20s F as far south as Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi with even lower (wind chills).

In contrast, some areas where the cold front had yet to reach on Friday, namely northern New England, experienced the warmest Christmas Day on record. In Caribou, Maine, the high temperature reached 57 F on Friday and shattered the previous record of 48 F, last set in 2014. The average high for the city on Christmas Day is 23 F.

Christmas Eve was a real adventure in the upper Ohio valley. Temperatures dropped drastically over the course of the afternoon. At 4 p.m., it was about 41 degrees and raining. Went to church for the two services (I do music, so I had to be at both). By the time the second service ended at 8 p.m., it was 28 degrees and falling, the rain had turned to sleet and the roads were starting to freeze. We crept home on the winding, hilly country roads, by which time the sleet had become snow. We ended up with 5 to 6 inches of snow and ice to shovel off the driveway Christmas Day. Some of the folks from church reported difficulty getting up their driveways Thursday night. Fortunately, and somewhat surprisingly, we never lost power.

It was all rain up here Christmas Eve. It flipped from heavy rain to snow overnight; by Christmas Day, it was coming down fairly heavy (though up north in Buffalo, the lake-effect was much more intense, enough for one of the local TV stations to stop the COVID fearmongering for the day).
