People who’ve worked hard — and successfully — to offer alternatives to low-performing neighborhood schools are condemned as “racists†who impose “white supremacy†on their students.
Steven Wilson, founder of the very successful Ascend charter school network in Brooklyn, talked about “cancel culture†at a Philanthropy Roundtable meeting.
Wilson “was fired from Ascend last year after publishing an essay arguing that ‘democratic education’ must strive to ‘grant all students the knowledge and faculties of mind that had once only been afforded the elite’,†writes Pondiscio. These academic values are not “white,†Wilson argued. He was accused of using “white supremacist rhetoric.â€
High-performing schools may not survive, if the charter community, reformers, philanthropists and other adults aren’t willing to defend them, celebrate their successes and push back against the cancelers, Wilson warned.
