The number of reported hate crimes across America rose to the highest level in more than a decade in 2019, which was also the deadliest year on record for victims of hate-based killings, according to an FBI report released Monday.
The 51 hate-motivated murders recorded last year include the 22 victims killed in a mass shooting that targeted Mexicans at a Texas Walmart. The stunning figure marks a 113% increase over the previous record of 24 set just a year earlier and is the highest number since the FBI began collecting that data in the early 1990s.
Overall, there were 7,314 hate crime incidents reported last year, up from 7,120 the year before. The current record is from 2008, when nearly 7,800 hate crimes were reported.
