Back on June 10th a Confederate monument there was torn down and destroyed. There was no law enforcement action taken at the time, but it turns out that the Portsmouth Police had been collecting evidence and information as they built a case. This week the first fruits of that investigation were announced. A number of people involved in the rioting were being charged with felonies and they included a Democratic state senator and several representatives of the NAACP. (WAVY News)

Quote
Portsmouth Police Chief Angela Greene announced during a Monday afternoon press conference that State Sen. Louise Lucas has been charged with two felonies for an incident at the city’s Confederate monument on June 10.

She, among others, is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and injury to a monument in excess of $1,000.

In addition to state senator Lucas, felony charges were filed against 13 other individuals. These included a member of the Portsmouth School Board, three Portsmouth NAACP representatives and three public defenders. All were charged with either injury to a monument in excess of $1,000 or conspiracy to commit a felony and injury to a monument in excess of $1,000. ...

That State Senator, school board member and three public defenders should be parred from government jobs for at least 10 years,

At least ten years after they finish serving their prison sentences.

"It's deeply troubling that on the verge of Virginia passing long-overdue police reform, the first Black woman to serve as our Senate Pro Tempore is suddenly facing highly unusual charges," Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, tweeted on Monday evening.

Black Virginia Police Chief Fired For Charging Prominent BLM Vandals And Public Officials

Quote
Back on June 10th in Portsmouth, Virginia, a large group of protesters decided to tear down and destroy a Confederate monument located in that city. An investigation was launched, led by Portsmouth Police Chief Angela Greene. After collecting video from the event and conducting interviews for two months, Greene announced in August that charges were being filed against 19 people who had been involved in the destruction. Police were seeking 13 more people who had yet to be identified. In the process, one of the protesters was severely injured when the statue was pulled down on top of them by his accomplices. That was also being investigated separately.

You might think that would be pretty much the end of the story, but it wasn’t. Among those arrested was State Sen. Louise Lucas, several leaders of the local Black Lives Matter movement, officials from the NAACP, and a member of the local school board. Since several crimes had obviously been committed, you might think that Chief Greene (who is Black, by the way) would be lauded for holding all citizens, regardless of their status accountable. You would be wrong, however. Howls of protest emerged not only from the community but from elected officials. Yesterday the situation came to a head and Chief Greene was unceremoniously fired.

Now there's one heck of a wrongful termination lawsuit.  Hope he gets 8 figures.

Me, too. Here is a man whose demonstrated integrity and dedication to the Law should get him job offers, (provided the local pols aren't rotten).

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The fired chief, Angela Green, is a woman.  I hope she winds up owning the city of Portsmouth and personally throws away the keys on those who fired her.

My bad. I hope she does, too. It takes guts to go up against the machine when they can fire you. It takes integrity, too. Those are precisely the sort of people who should be police chiefs, because they will have the backs of anyone in their organization who does the same.
