FBI Probing Allegations That Trump Backers Put Biden Campaign Bus in Peril
By Ian Talley
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations that Trump supporters endangered a Biden campaign bus on a Texas highway Friday, according to people familiar with the matter.
Several dozen trucks, SUVs and cars bearing pro-Trump signs and flags were waiting for the campaign bus on an I-35 access road a few miles outside of Austin and began amassing around it when it pulled onto the interstate, according to Biden campaign staff and videos of the incident posted on social media.
Campaign staff members and Democratic candidate Wendy Davis, who is running for the U.S. House seat for Texas' 21st district, became concerned for their safety after the vehicles surrounded their bus and forced it to slow down and veer out of its lane, according to Tariq Thowfeek, the communications director for the Biden campaign in Texas.
After staff called 911, local police authorities responded to the complaint and met the bus at its final planned stop of a three-day tour of Austin, Mr. Thowfeek said. Shaken by the incident, the campaign staff canceled the event, though the broader Biden campaign continued in Texas in what some pollsters are predicting to be one of the closest races for a Democratic presidential contender in decades.
