Cunningham widens lead over Tillis after news of affair: poll

Cal Cunningham has widened his lead over Sen. Thom Tillis (R) in North Carolina's marquee Senate race after revelations over an extramarital affair threatened to derail the Democrat's candidacy.

Cunningham led Tillis, who is running for a second term, by a 48 to 44 percent margin among registered voters in a new Monmouth University poll released Tuesday. The former state senator’s lead grows to 5 points among likely voters in a high turnout scenario, 49 to 44 percent, while his lead shrinks to 1 point, 48 to 47 percent, in a low turnout scenario.

Despite the scandal over Cunningham’s affair, the Democrat’s lead grew from the same poll from September, which was released before the scandal hit and showed Cunningham with a slimmer 1-point lead over Tillis among registered voters.


The survey suggests the Senate race will closely match the results of the presidential race, with Democratic nominee Joe Biden leading President Trump by anywhere from 1 to 4 points, depending on the turnout model.

The poll is a boon for the Cunningham, who is married. Texts revealed he exchanged messages of a sexual nature with another married woman, Arlene Guzman Todd, a public relations strategist from California. Todd later confirmed the two had had an affair.

Cunningham also serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, which is investigating the relationship.

Four U.S. Army veterans condemned North Carolina Democrat Senate candidate Cal Cunningham for his extramarital affair with a disabled combat veteran’s wife, in a new campaign ad by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) on Monday morning.

The ad discusses the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), which Cunningham — an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel — may Error 404 (Not Found)!!1

A transcript of the ad read:

    The Code of Military Justice. All soldiers live by it. Just like the oath we all take. It’s how soldiers know we can trust each other in combat. It’s life and death.

    Cal Cunningham violated his oath when he had an affair with another soldier’s wife. That’s why the Army is investigating Cal Cunningham.

    Veterans know we can’t trust Cal Cunningham. And North Carolina can’t trust Cal Cunningham in the Senate.

As I wrote last week, embattled Senate nominee Cal Cunningham has been getting brutalized by the North Carolina political media down the homestretch of his Senate campaign, something you rarely see happen to Democrats here in NC.

Here we are a week later, and things haven’t gotten any better on that front for the married father of two who back in September looked like he might have a lock on the race against his Republican opponent Sen. Thom Tillis. In fact, they’ve gotten worse when you watch what reporters have to say about their continued attempts to contact him in order to ask some questions.

In the final full week before election day, Cunningham – who admitted earlier this month to an affair with the wife of a fellow Army veteran – has been hit with, among other things, the dreaded “empty chair” treatment from the media, courtesy of local news outlet WTVD.

Their reporter Jonah Kaplan sat down next to an empty chair and gestured to it while talking about how they had reached out many times to the campaign but were denied. ... Red State

BS.  An officer is expected to uphold the highest morals and especially the UCMJ.  POS is nothing more than a monkey looking for a rut.  He had every reason to say no, but his complete lack of morals says otherwise.  Completely untrustworthy piece of human debris wearing the uniform and you appear to excuse it because the women were "willing".  Eff that.

Add  the fact he pretty much has gone into hiding and not taking interviews since numerous examples of affairs have surfaced.  Guess he figures if it works for Biden, it will work for him.
