As Switzerland votes in favour of acquiring new fighter jets with a budget of more than $6.5billion, Washington was quick to take the opportunity to offer its F-35s and F-18s for the neutral country.

The United States Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) in a press release on Wednesday announced the intent and determination of possible foreign military sales to the Swiss Government for the sale of forty F-35 fighter jets and related equipment, worth $6.58 billion.

The US is not "desperate" to sell F35s...too many European countries are signing on and buying a clearly superior aircraft to what the rest of the world has to offer.

Granted, the F35 has its warts, and I would know, still supporting flight test on these buggers for the past 11 years.  But the aircraft has shown time and again that it is top dawg in the battle space, just as the F22 has before it.

This reads like a real sweetheart deal with all the bells and whistles thrown in to entice the Swiss...will be interesting to see how it turns out.

The Typhoon and Rafale are what are sometimes called Generation 4.5 jet fighters, Gen 4 with upgrades from early Gen 4 craft. Current F-15s, F-16s, and F-18s are also considered Gen 4.5.

So the choice, technologically, is between maturity at/near its probable peak or next Gen that will likely grow and evolve.

During WWII the Swiss were tenacious in defending their airspace...shooting down Allied and Axis aircraft alike.

I would imagine they cling to the same concept today.
