FNC’s Wallace on Maskless Trump Team at Debate: ‘They Broke the Rules’

Fox News host Chris Wallace had a heated exchange with Trump campaign adviser Steve Cortes about President Donald Trump’s family and advisers not wearing masks at the first presidential debate that Wallace moderated on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday.”

Cortes said, “The fact that he still got infected shows us that unfortunately, this virus has that kind of power. The president, though, and he’s made this clear, he was unwilling to completely sequester himself, to take no risk, because leaders take risks. And he is the servant of the people as well as the commander-in-chief, and so he said he must be around the people he serves. He took reasonable risks.”

Wallace said, “Let’s talk about reasonable risks because there was the debate on Tuesday night that I moderated. The rules from the Cleveland Clinic could not have been more clear. Everyone — everyone in the audience — was to wear a mask. The president and the former vice president and I were the only ones exempt from that. We’ve got a picture up on the screen. After the First Family came in, they all took off their masks. So did the White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. Do they think that the health and safety rules for everybody else do not apply to them?”

So where are the links to the scientific studies you claim exist that show a paper or cloth mask provides any significant protection from a virus in the air? Especially in the absence of eye coverings.

Particularly any study prior to Covid-19 and politics mixing. There are decades of flu seasons that have been studied regarding masks. The consistent conclusion - they do little to nothing.

It seems a very high percentage of people in the Republican camp have come down with the virus.
I'm sure more than a few of them took proper measures: distanced and wore masks. Yet, they still came down with it.
I'm suspecting that masks don't help much around infected people in close proximity.
The wife and I wear masks when in stores, but I have my doubts as to their efficacy.

Droplets may well be captured by a cloth mask - but the moisture surrounding the virus quickly evaporates freeing the virus to continue on. And then there's your eyes. If the virus is in moisture droplets in the air your eyes will capture them. Straight into the sinus system.

The majority of these links is simple opinion with no evidence cited.  The only scientific study (based on numerous assumptions) that I could find in any of those links is this:  https://files.fast.ai/papers/masks_lit_review.pdf

The erroneous assumption there is that the virus is spread by droplets and that aerosol transmission is miniscule and thus irrelevant.  This is not the case.  The bottom line is that masks are deemed effective if used in combination with other methods which include keeping 6 ft away from others, keeping hands washed, and not touching one's face.  If I had to do without any of the four, it would be the masks because the droplets they are supposed to trap (with 3-60% effectiveness depending on which mask you have) is not necessary if one is six feet away from anyone else.
