Romney backs pre-election Supreme Court vote, paving way for McConnell, Trump
By Jordain Carney - 09/22/20 10:02 AM EDT

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) signaled on Tuesday that he is open to confirming a Supreme Court nominee this year, solidifying GOP support for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) vow to hold a vote on President Trump's nominee.

“The Constitution gives the President the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees. Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the President’s nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications," Romney said in a statement.

Romney's decision is a blow to Senate Democrats and a boon to McConnell, with both sides watching him closely as a potential swing vote on bringing up whomever Trump nominates to fill the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat just weeks before a presidential election.

I'm not the slightest bit concerned about Romney.  There is no blackmail material on him, such as whatever they have on Murkowski.

I'll believe it when I see him actually vote "yes" on whomever Trump nominates.  Until then, I consider him to be a "no" vote.  He's that messed up.

Never forget Romney agreed with the Rats and voted to oust the President back in February.  Why on Earth would he change his mind about the fitness of the President to make an appointment?

It's a different scenario, and I just can't see him trashing a catholic lady to spite Trump.

Smells like a set-up to me.   Pretend to be willing to vote Yes and at the last minute, vote no... making it too late to get the nomination through before the election.  If Romney does this, he should be dealt with....

harshly.

I consider the double-cross far, far more likely than Romney voting to confirm ACB.

I'm looking at things from a little different perspective on this.  Mitt is Mormon and a member of the LDS church which opposes abortion and believes in the sanctity of life.  I think maybe he sees putting a conservative on the bench that opposes abortion, as an opportunity to overturn Roe v. Wade and I think we may just see him push for that IF Trump is able to put a conservative on the bench. In this case (and I could be wrong) I think his religious beliefs outweighs his disdain for Trump.

He will be up for re-election next election cycle and it would truly be a feather in his cap to be able to claim that he was instrumental in overturning R v W.

Or maybe..... rather than it being a matter of "his religious beliefs"....

could be a case of extreme pressure from the Mormon Church.

I don't think Mittens really has any deep-held beliefs, of which Religion is only one thing to be bartered.

I agree.... but the power of the Mormon Church (especially in Utah)... is not to be underestimated.

@Cyber Liberty

Please note he never said he was going to vote FOR the nominee.

This way he gets to have it both ways. He was for the vote, but against the candidate.

Oh, you betcha I noticed.  The news here is he isn't dismissing it out of hand, which to my little mind means he plans on playing coy until he has to say "Yay" or "Nay," and that's where his treachery will occur.  A deliberate wasting of time to stick it to Trump.  He hates Trump more than he holds anything else dear.

I can see him doing a "Thumbs Down" gestor just like his buddy McStain when the time for a vote comes.

That's possible. I saw several interviews of him (non-political) -- faith and family are extremely important to him.  IMHO I still think he's going to put his disdain for Trump aside for pro life. I would be surprised if there is more to his coming forward and saying he would back a vote for the Supreme Court than just that.

Yes, he went against Trump on impeachment because that is the stance he believed in -- not necessarily because it was anti-Trump (supposedly).

Yes, Mittens has been a disappointment, more liberal than I ever thought, but again, there is a chance for the courts to vote pro life and I think he's in.

I don't want to turn this into a John McCain thread, but I certainly agree with you.

I must admit I was somewhat pleased to have read the Obituary.  I thought the full State Funeral to be a bit over the top, though.  Everybody there named "McCain" were shameless in banging the cup for that.

Mittens might get lucky, and have a Senator other than the leftist Bobbsey Twins vote "Nay," thus taking him off the hook so he can vote the "Aye" to placate the people in Utah he obviously has zero respect for.

Collins is going to be fun to watch, she's in a tight race she may well lose.
