5,000 Miles Apart, U.S. Army Troops Practiced Seizing Islands And Rocketing Chinese Ships

U.S. Air Force airlifters landed on a dirt airstrip on a remote Pacific island, disgorging U.S. Army soldiers. An Army landing craft beached on the same island to offload rocket launchers.

A week later, Air Force stealth fighters flew overhead as Army paratroopers dropped onto an Alaskan island chain, following airlifters hauling more rocket launchers.

The September exercises, scattered across millions of square miles of the Asia-Pacific region, separately might not look like much. But add them together and it’s clear—they’re practice for an Army-led island-hopping campaign targeting Chinese claims on the South China Sea.
