NATO Fighters Practiced Shooting Down Russian Bombers
David Axe

A bloody air war raged over the North Sea on Thursday. Well, a pretend bloody air war. The goal apparently was to train for hunting down, and destroying, Russian bombers attacking NATO forces.

More than 50 American, British and Dutch warplanes converged off the eastern coast of the United Kingdom for Point Blank 20-4, an aerial exercise focusing on defensive counter-air operations.

The simulated battle involved F-15, F-16, F-35 and Typhoon fighters, B-52 bombers and KC-135 tankers, according to the U.S. Air Force. The B-52s’ presence is a dead giveaway as to the exercise’s purpose. There have been other Point Blank war games, but this was the first to involve the eight-engine bombers.
