Column: What if, in those violent big cities run by liberal Democrats, the politics were different?

You want to play a game?

It’s Labor Day weekend. You’ve got some time. But as the legendary Chicago bartender Mr. Dooley used to say, this game ain’t bean bag.

If you’re outside checking on those baby back ribs on your smoker, you might have a minute to play “what if?” like when you were a kid:

What if, rather than liberal Democratic mayors in Democratic towns being overwhelmed by violence, things were reversed?

What if these were Republican mayors, in red states, overwhelmed by violent protests from the right wing, confronted by people in MAGA hats or those middle-aged anti-tax tea party activists who always seemed to clean up after themselves when they protested?

What if they were the ones rioting, burning and looting during their “mostly peaceful” protests, with bail money for the arrested provided by the staff of a Republican presidential candidate, and media making it clear there was great political value in the violence?

And what if those Republican activists confronted fellow citizens in restaurants, shouting at them, demanding they demonstrate fealty to their politics by raising a fist?

In many of them, it might help a little, but overall probably wouldn't make much difference.

Consider Burlington, Vermont.
It's the largest city in the state, probably more "to the left" than Portland or Seattle, and -- not too many problems there.

There's a reason for that.
But you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
