Suburban Sheriffs Refuse Governor’s Request to Aid in Policing Portland Protests

On Sunday night, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown proposed a partnership of regional law enforcement to ease tensions in the streets of Portland following the fatal shooting of a Trump-supporting protester.

Today, the sheriffs of Clackamas and Washington counties rejected a key component of Brown's plan: They refused to send officers into Portland, saying they would not police protests in a county that won't prosecute people who break the law.

Shortly after the two sheriffs refused Brown's request, the Gresham police chief did the same, and the associations representing the state's sheriffs and police chiefs also preemptively rejected the idea of policing Portland.

Portland is mostly in Multnomah County, but parts of Portland are in Clackamas and Washington Counties. So those two sheriffs' refusal is immediately relevant (unlike, e.g., a refusal from Kackson County in southern Oregon).

Geography aside, these sheriffs', Gresham PD's, and the sheriffs' association's refusal calls out a major reason the Portland riots have lasted 3 months" Portland catches-and-releases and doesn't meaningfully prosecute. Meaningful consequences would get the rioters off the streets and discourage at least some who haven't yet gotten arrested.

Further, Portland is but one of several cities that fuel the riots and looters with catch-and-release non-prosecution.

Police are investigating the shooting death of a protester in Portland; Matt Finn reports.

The sheriffs of Clackamas and Washington County in Oregon said they won't send staff to help with the nightly unrest in Portland after Gov. Kate Brown unveiled a plan to bring an end to violence in the city.

Brown had asked the sheriffs and the Gresham Police Department to support the Portland Police Bureau with personnel and resources "to keep the peace and protect free speech."

Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts on Monday said the governor never approached him before unveiling her plan to mobilize local law enforcement agencies in the Portland protests, and that he has no plans to send his staff to nightly demonstrations.
