'We're on defense': Mitch McConnell says GOP senators 'understand' chance of losing majority in November

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell knows Republicans in his chamber are going to face tough campaigns this year to hold on to their majority in November.
"We've got a lot of seats to defend all over the country, and in about seven or eight places, it’s like a knife fight in an alley already, and we very much understand the Senate could go either way," McConnell said Wednesday on Fox News's The Story with Martha MacCallum.
McConnell's comments come as a new analysis by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report shows a bleak outlook for several GOP senators who are losing ground to their Democratic challengers. President Trump's low polling numbers in comparison to his presumptive Democratic challenger Joe Biden are also a worrying factor for Republican chances of holding on to power in the Senate.
"As of now, Democrats are a slight favorite to win the Senate majority," the report said, citing multiple Republican strategists who see grim prospects for their party come November.
