House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that lawmakers will be required to wear masks on the House floor to avoid potential spread of the coronavirus.
Pelosi first floated the mask mandate during a Wednesday call with House Democrats and later unveiled the rule in the chamber. Lawmakers and their staff members will be required to wear face masks while they are in the House except when recognized to speak. Failure to comply will be considered "serious breach of decorum," the California Democrat said.
The decision comes after Rep. Louis Gohmert tested positive for the coronavirus earlier in the day. The Texas Republican has been reluctant to wear a mask on Capitol Hill and even partially blamed contracting the virus from potential germs being in his mask.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends masks and face coverings for people to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
