I moved from the area (Vancouver, WA, just across the river) just a few months ago but I probably went into Portland only a few times during the day for the last ten years. You could just see the city decline, the freeways were lined with tents and there was trash everywhere. It's been a no-go zone and it'll never get any better.

A leftist citadel, that tard Wheeler was re-elected because his opponent was even more of a whack job somehow. And I don't know from direct experience, but I've heard SF, LA, and Seattle are even worse.

The situation in Portland, Ore. is grim. The city has catastrophic low numbers of police officers following the 2020 BLM-Antifa riots & far-left demands that police quit because the residents hate them.

And yet the federal and state governments continue to pour out free money to these people.

A small glimmer of hope in PDX: Multnomah County prosecutor Nathan Vasquez leads incumbent Mike Schmidt in DA race.
Schmidt, the current prosecuting atty, can take credit for Portland having become such a $#!thole.

... Vasquez, 47, zeroed in on what he characterized as Schmidt’s failure to lead, whether it was on crime, the state of downtown Portland or within the office. He accused Schmidt of sitting on the sidelines as the public use of fentanyl proliferated and called attention to Schmidt’s shifting views of Measure 110, Oregon’s first-in-the-nation drug decriminalization law.

Schmidt, meanwhile, encountered a dramatically altered political landscape than when he ran in 2020, as his message failed to resonate with voters who four years ago enthusiastically swept him into office after a campaign that highlighted racial and ethnic disparities in the justice system.

Nationally, Schmidt is the latest progressive DA to face the prospect of defeat.  ...

On Tuesday night, voters in Multnomah County, Oregon fired one-term George Soros-backed incumbent District Attorney Mike Schmidt.

Fox 12 called the race at approximately 9:30 pm local time with Schmidt’s opponent Nathan Vasquez leading 58 percent to 42 percent. In a non-partisan primary, if a candidate garners over 50 percent of the vote, they are declared the winner of the election but don’t take office until January 2025.
 
According to the Oregonian, Vasquez, a longtime prosecutor, began working for the District Attorney’s office fresh out of law school. Over the last 24 years, he worked his way up the chain to become a supervisor.

The defeat of Mike Schmidt puts a spring in my step - and I don't even have any connection to, nor know anyone who lives in Portland. Of the two folks I know who did live there, one moved to Eugene and the other to suburban Pittsburgh.

... I went inside Schmidt’s election night party at the Jupiter Hotel. The party ended early.

His campaign set up an area where one could take selfies in front of a "Schmidt Show" light backdrop, adopting the slogan of a local anti-Schmidt campaign highlighting the public safety disaster and death under his tenure. There was a DJ who played music as people mingled around uncomfortably as it became clearer that there was no path to victory.

Toward the end of the party, Schmidt and his wife looked visibly shaken. Schmidt forced a smile when his family spoke on his behalf on the microphone. Schmidt himself said few words to his supporters. There were around 100 attendees.

A former Multnomah County District Attorney's Office prosecutor who worked under Schmidt told me last week for the NY Post article that Schmidt has long had high office ambitions in the Democrat Party and tried to use his prosecutorial choices to generate positive press (e.g., not prosecuting Antifa rioters). He misjudged Portland's long-term tolerance for crime and open drug abuse.
