On this episode of Objective:Health, we talk more about the latest corona-craziness. President Trump announced a plan to have a Covid-19 vaccine available by the end of 2020. Dubbed 'Operation Warp Speed', the details of the plan seem to come straight out of the film Idiocracy.

Heading the operation, for instance, is GlaxoSmithKline vaccine chairman Moncef Slaoui, a man who oversaw the Pandemrix vaccine for swine flu in 2009 which resulted in over a thousand recipients getting brain damage. And remember that GSK has the distinction of paying the largest fine ever paid by a pharmaceutical company at $3 billion back in 2012 for covering up the deadly side effects of the diabetes drug Avandia.

Combine this with the fact that fastest ever vaccine development currently is four years, and the development of a coronavirus vaccine, while attempted many times, has never been successful (often with disasterous results) and you can see why an estimated one third of Americans are not willng to take the Covid-19 vaccine if and when it becomes available. These people are insane, and anyone willing to put their lives, and those of their families, in their hands are either ignorant or equally insane themselves.

The GSK vaccine is not the farthest ahead in the testing process. So Moncef Slaoui is a Straw Bogey-Dog. While GSK is a partner in Operation Warp Speed, the vaccine farthest into the testing process, well into Phase III, is AstraZeneca (Oxford University). Next most advanced in testing is Moderna, which will begin its Phase III testing next week. Putting it into plain English, Phases I and II establish dosages that are safe, with minimal side effects, and establish that the vaccine causes production of antibodies in hundreds of different test volunteers. Phase III is done with 10s of thousands of test subjects, and success is very likely. IOW, AstraZeneca, Moderna, etc. are doing due diligence in testing.

The "brain damage" was narcolepsy. "Brain damage" is a tendentious and misleading phrase. People with narcolepsy can lead lives so normal that many/most who know them will be unaware of their condition. In saying that I am referring to a member of my immediate family. The Finns and Swedes did considerable research in 2010 and concluded that 36 cases per million population could be attributed to Pandemrix. So that 1000 cases of narcolepsy was out of some 30 million vaccinations. IOW, an extremely low risk; there is no zero-risk vaccine.

Ummmm, no. There were just two corona virus outbreaks during which vaccine development was attempted, SARS and MERS. In both outbreaks, the magnitude of the outbreak was moderate enough that vaccine development was discontinued because the magnitude of the outbreak did not justify the cost of development and testing.

So, a dishonest Straw Bogey-Dog, a dishonest phrase, and two false claims in a single sentence ... who is "Signs of the Times"? Some annoymorous anti-vaxxer group? Some outfit spreading second-hand "information" from sources like "The Onion"? Some outfit disparaging Trump Administration actions for political reasons?

And before anyone asks, when a Covid-19 vaccine is approved - very possibly in a few months - I will get the vaccine (absent any specific contraindication in my current state of health).
