President Trump’s proposal to cut payroll taxes in the next coronavirus aid package is gaining little traction among Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill as lawmakers ramp up negotiations on legislation that can pass through the House and Senate in the coming weeks.
“There are some differences of opinion on the question of the payroll tax cut and whether that's the best way to go,†Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Tuesday. “And so we're still under suffering for the administration on that.â€
The payroll tax cut proposal was barely discussed when Republicans met privately with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Tuesday, lawmakers said.
“They mentioned the president really wanted it, but it wasn’t really dwelled upon,†Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican, told the Washington Examiner following the meeting with Mnuchin and Meadows.
