It's still burning?

@Cyber Liberty

I don't think so. I read a news report around 2 PM that said the fire had been put out.

No,I don't remember which one it was.

Bonhomme Richard is ‘survivable,’ Navy official says, after fires that burned four days are extinguished

American Military News  July 17, 2020 Andrew Dyer - The San Diego Union-Tribune

https://americanmilitarynews.com/2020/07/bonhomme-richard-is-survivable-navy-official-says-after-fires-that-burned-four-days-are-extinguished/

Quote
A blaze that engulfed the San Diego-based amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard for more than four days was extinguished Thursday, Navy officials announced.

What is still unknown about one of the worst noncombat Naval fires is its cause, the extent of the damage and whether and when the ship will be repaired. An investigation is expected to take weeks.

Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 3, said at a news conference Thursday the ship is salvageable.

“The survivability of the ship is there — it’s survivable,” he said. “It’s in stable condition all the way through.”

Crews still must inspect the ship thoroughly to put down all hot spots, Sobeck said.

“The flames are out, but the heat is still there,” he said. “We’re going space by space as I speak to every compartment checking for hot spots.”

Once this is done, Sobeck said, the fire will be officially out.

“What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts.”

According to Sobeck, 40 sailors and 23 civilians were treated for minor injuries such as smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion during the roughly 100-hourlong firefight.

Having spent 3 1/2 years aboard a carrier and gone through 2 yard periods, I have a couple observations.  Keep in mind I was a locker slammer and not an academy grad.  Every yard bird who does cutting or welding is supposed to have a fire watch with them while they are working.  That is a sailor with a fire canister to put out fires immediately.  I have seen no mention of that anywhere.  I also question why they still had over a million gallons of fuel aboard when the ship is cold iron and will have many fire sources working on the ship.  The carrier I was on got 13 1/2 feet per gallon of fuel.  I figured it out once and that is something like 500 gallons per mile - when tuned up.  Obviously, it didn't need all that fuel to get underway if an emergency arose.  And as we know, there weren't enough people on board to get under weigh anyhow.

And why there would still be large quantities of aviation fuel aboard seems troublesome to me.  Since squadrons fly aboard, the ship really doesn't need any until under weigh which they could get on an immediate unrep.  To me, it seems an unnecessary risk to have all that fuel aboard in a yard period.  By the way, the rule of thumb to locker slammers is when the weight of the paperwork equals the weight of the ship, the yard period if complete and I was on a 73,000 ton ship.

More Than Just a Fire: The Implications of the Bonhomme Richard Catastrophe
Bryan McGrath
July 16, 2020

As I write this, the USS Bonhomme Richard — a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship — burns at Pier 2, Naval Station San Diego. Scores of Navy and civilian firefighters have fought the blaze for over 72 hours and it is difficult to tell from afar how much progress is being made. One thing is clear: The ship will likely be, at best, out of action for years or, at worst, stricken from Navy rolls. In either case, there will be considerable impact to ongoing naval operations, force development efforts, and naval integration initiatives. While navalists tend to judge navies by the number of ships that comprise them, the plain truth is that not all ships are created equal. The loss of some ships is much worse than others. That is what Americans are watching happen before their eyes. Confidence in the Navy is shaken.

@Sighlass

Ok,I don't know diddly-squat about naval ships. The closest I ever came to the Navy was escorting some classified stuff back from the Dominican Republic on an LST around 1965.

However,I have been told that there is now a lot of aluminum in newer ships in order to make them faster improve "fuel mileage". You were probably looking at melted aluminum.
