Lee Health reports only 17 ICU beds available

God help us.  We've doubled our numbers in a couple of weeks with no end in sight.  Interesting that Miami-Dade is closing gyms, beaches, restaurants (except curbside) again, yet there were shuttles running from that area to our beaches over the 4th.     There are 17 beds left in the hospital system -- that system consists of 4 hospitals.  Even IF they open up one of the arenas in the area and turn them into a makeshift hospital -- we still need extra doctors, specialists, nurses and CNA's of which there is a definite shortage.

Lee Health is reporting they have only 17 beds available in their hospital system as cases of COVID-19 and the rate of hospitalizations continue to rise in Southwest Florida.

CEO Dr. Larry Antonucci said that at the current rate, there will be no beds by the end of the month.

Theresa Rooney said Monday that her husband got the last ICU bed at Cape Coral Hospital, and she has a message for everyone.

Before doctors put a tube down Art Rooney’s throat, he said, “I hope everything works out. Bye …”

His wife now has a message of her own.

“This is absolutely real. My husband is fighting for his life right now. People need to take this seriously,” she said.

Theresa thought that maybe if she could take people inside her husband’s ICU room, if she could get people to feel her heartbreak, they may approach the virus differently.

“There were a couple times that I thought I was going to lose him, and I just have to standby and wait because I’m not allowed to see him.”

She hopes her pain might get people to do what they’re told: wear a mask and stay home. She prays that other families never suffer the way she has...............

Then turn people away, for Christ's sake. It's not like we have viable treatments at this point. Once you get to the intubation, it's already a death sentence anyway. They're just taking up space for patients with conditions that can actually be treated!

Hopefully, you'll never have to watch a loved one's life be discarded because some doctor decides to play God which is what you are advocating. One way to ensure that social security recipients don't survive right?  Here I thought all lives mattered.  This isn't just affecting the elderly at this point, we just had an 8 year old and a 17 year old die of COVID -- maybe they were just left untreated because there was no room at the inn.
