Dr. Oz says Americans have 'gotten sloppy' against COVID-19: 'The virus is not done with us yet'

By Talia Kaplan | Fox News

Dr. Mehmet Oz said on Thursday that people have “gotten sloppy” with some of their precautions against COVID-19 and warned that “the virus is not done with us yet.”

“We got a bunch of folks who are rebellious, frustrated, they’ve been locked up for a long time, especially young people, and we’ve gotten sloppy as you see,” Oz told “Fox & Friends” on Thursday.

He went on to say that “we want to go back to a new normal,” but “he virus is not done with us yet so we got to keep battling it.”

He explained that “this is especially a problem among our young folks.”

Oz said the average age of infection is “about 35, half the age of what it was early in the pandemic,” which he said shows that “the vulnerable people, the people who are overweight, hypertensive, diabetic or older are staying away from the opening process.”

“But the younger people, because they’re frustrated, they’re hanging out with each other, they’re going out to meet new people and we cannot afford to let our guard down right now because reversing the trend gets a lot tougher once the virus is widely present,” he continued.

Someone needs to say it: social distancing has never been tested on the scale and length of time that it is being attempted now. And we will see, as sure as the sun rises in the east, that it cannot be sustained.

Because people will get lonely. Desperately lonely. Lonely enough that they want to die if there is no hope for the future, and right now it's looking awfully bleak. You're talking about a generation that is behind its forefathers in marriage, creating of a family, and career progress. Their companionship comes in groups. Deprive them of that, and you cause severe harm.

Browbeating people for trying to treat loneliness that is out of their control will only make their situation worse. If you can't find a way to allow people to socialize, IN PERSON, safely, then don't pretend social distancing is a viable long-term solution.
