The stabbing rampage in a British park that left three people dead is now being treated as a terrorist attack, police said.


Dean Haydon, the U.K.’s coordinator for counterterrorism policing, said Sunday morning that counterterror detectives were taking over the investigation into the attack in the town of Reading, west of London. Police had earlier said the motive was unclear.

Three people were killed and three others seriously injured when a 25-year-old man, who is in custody, went on a rampage in Reading’s Forbury Gardens Park on Saturday evening.

The man is believed to be Libyan, sources told the BBC and Sky News. He reportedly served time in prison in England for a minor offense.

Local authorities in England issued several tweets on Saturday regarding details of a stabbing attack that injured several people and ended with one arrest, according to police.

There is no clear indication of motive yet, but Britain's interior minister said she was "deeply concerned," according to The Associated Press.

The Thames Valley Police included a link to their website with details of the case and a request that the public share any video or photographic evidence, instead of posting it on social media.

Reading stabbing attack suspect Khairi Saadallah known to MI5 - sources

The man held on suspicion of killing three people at a park in Reading was known to MI5, security sources say.

Khairi Saadallah, 25, from the town, was arrested on Saturday and police say they are not looking for anyone else over the terror incident.

Sources told the BBC he is originally from Libya and came to the attention of MI5 in 2019.  ...

Security sources said the suspect came to the attention of the security services after they received information he had aspirations to travel abroad - potentially for terrorism, according to the BBC's home affairs correspondent Dominic Casciani.

When the information was further investigated, as the first stage of looking into a potential lead, no genuine threat or immediate risk was identified.

No case file was opened which would have made him a target for further investigation. ... BBC

... On Monday, Joe Ritchie-Bennett was also named by US TV network CBS as having died.

The 39-year-old was originally from Philadelphia and had lived in the UK for 15 years, according to reports.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper, Mr Ritchie-Bennett initially worked for a law firm in London after moving to the UK. About 10 years ago he joined a Dutch pharmaceutical company which has its headquarters in Reading.  ...

Many hotels in the United Kingdom are presently closed because of coronavirus restrictions which make long-distance travel difficult. Reports quickly emerged that this hotel was one of a number leased by the British government and local authorities to host asylum seekers, and eyewitness accounts related the presence of asylum seekers in the hotel at the time of the attack.

It is not known if those individuals were in any way involved in the mass stabbing, however.  ...
