Joe Biden can do more to win over voters than react to Donald Trump

Joe Biden appears more poised to win the election than ever before. Following a very damaging two weeks for Donald Trump, a number of new polls show the former vice president with a significant lead nationally, in key battleground states, and among the critical independent voters who played a significant role in 2016.
In addition to independent voters, some weak Republicans have even defected from Trump recently. The president faces widespread criticism over his initial downplaying of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as his recent missteps relating to the current civil unrest, which led many prominent members of his own party to denounce him as divisive and unfit to lead.
To be sure, Trump has clear electoral vulnerabilities. However, Biden can maximize his chance of defeating the incumbent president by running a campaign that is more than a reaction to Trump’s polarization and division. In order for Biden to consolidate his lead and win over the independents and weak Republicans who have defected from Trump, he needs to have a clear, overarching message of unity and inclusion.
