Rolling Stone is raising eyebrows with a piece that argues that Capt. Olivia Benson, the iconic cop character from TV's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," should also be "canceled."

Following the cancellations of "Cops" and "Live PD," the magazine published a piece with the headline, "Sorry, Olivia Benson Is Canceled Too," referring to the NYPD detective who has long been played by actress Mariska Hargitay.

"For 21 seasons, Olivia Benson has served as the quintessential Good Cop, the embodiment of all of the qualities we wish law enforcement figures would have: she’s tough but fair, vulnerable yet steely-eyed, displaying constant compassion for survivors and providing no quarter to abusers. She always fights for and believes victims, a marked contrast to real-life law enforcement officials, whose record on convicting sexual offenders is abysmal," writer EJ Dickson acknowledged, later praising Hargitay for her real-life activism helping victims of domestic violence.

Dickson, however, later argued, "But Olivia Benson won’t change, not fundamentally, because nobody wants Olivia Benson to change. We’re probably not going to see her making an effort to hire more police officers of color. We’re probably not going to see George Floyd incorporated into plotlines in anything but a cursory, ripped-from-the-headlines way." ...

And in case the author didn't notice,  L&OSVU has a person of color in Sgt. Tutuoloa and he's been with the show for most of its 21-year run.  There is also a commissioner or something above Benson who is also black.  The L&O franchise has always had minorities in significant roles in its shows and there are also other minorities represented -- Hispanics, Muslims, Jews, LGBTQRSTUVs, etc.    These series have more than treated minorities fairly. 

And I just read the George Floyd case will be dealt with next season in a fictional form.  The L&O franchise has been known to base many of their stories on real-life events.  I remember one story on the original Law & Order that was so close to a real event, it came with a disclaimer.  There is nothing wrong with SVU, Benson or anyone or anything else connected with L&O.  Maybe if the author had really watched the series, he would know that.

PDs that have worked with various networks in producing these shows need to inform the networks that there is no crawling back, that cancel-stupidity has consequences.

That's funny. I am a big Columbo fan too. Once got the DVD set of all episodes for my birthday. Even my friends and family know I like it. BTW, Cops is playing now on WGN. Makes me wonder if these cancellations are a temporary kneejerk overreaction, or if they will stand over time. Wouldn't be surprised to see Cops and Live PD come back before the end of the year.

We can't have a radicalized Leftist mob determining what is and is not on television. If it were up to the Communists to determine programming, there would be nothing but BET, MSNBC, and the Weather Channel. Three stations. Just like in mother Russia.

I have the same DVD set too! The shows from the 70s, 90s, and a couple of the few Mrs. Columbo’s with Captain Janeway!

I thought they were good because I remember watching them as a child, but when I bought the DVDs a few years ago I thought they were better than I remembered them. And the guest stars! Everyone looked so young! I swear i thought Martin Sheen was Charlie Sheen for a second.

They just renewed “Law and Order SVU” for another season, and I read they green lit Christopher Meloni for a spin-off. I got to wonder if these shows are now on hiatus.

I may not have watched every Columbo, but I'm pretty sure I don't recall there ever being a Black antagonist so he might have been OK as long as he was subordinate to a strong Afro Chief who continually set him upon the right path.
