IMHO, Walz's lack of leadership is an indictment of the Minnesota National Guard. Their performance has been absolutely terrible. I just don't know if it's a lack of leadership, training, or both. Consider this: Walz served in the MN Guard for 24 years, reaching the rank of Sergeant Major.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_WalzThe lack of leadership by Walz reflects badly on the MN Guard.
I'm not putting myself on a pedestal, but I remember how we handled things when I was on active duty. About five miles from our motor pool was an isolated Nike-Hercules battery, with "special weapons" on site. Several times a year, they were subject to a variety of Nuclear Surety Inspections, and my battery was tasked with providing a reserve force, AKA ARF. It consisted of 40 soldiers, and two Towed Vulcan squads.
There was a need for the ARF, considering the Baader-Meinhof gang and other assorted terrorists operated in the general area. There is no doubt that our operations were watched and reported on, if only for intel purposes. What they saw was that we didn't come to play: my soldiers were issued live ammunition, and the Vulcans were loaded to the breech before we left the motor pool. The only issue I had was that my soldiers had not performed small unit infantry tactics since basic training. That's where I thanked my lucky stars my ROTC program at Gonzaga was active, to include weekend training and Spring Camp at Fort Lewis.
I think we offered sufficient deterrent to the bad guys, dissuading them from attacking that battery.
You can't send units piecemeal into hostile zones, you send in overwhelming force, to scare the $hit out of the "protestors". The directives from the authorities need to be completely understood, unlike the drivel we've heard from the mayor and governor. And you don't send in weekend warriors, you send in Regular Army units to establish, and enforce, peace. Yes, and they go in locked and loaded, so they can protect themselves and accomplish the mission.
That's it...I've had all I can take.
