Maybe the article goes into this some, but the NIH funding of the Wuhan lab that has everybody POed was actually a part of a much larger effort across multiple eastern and southeastern Asian (and Oceania) nations to study how viruses cross the human-animal barrier, especially in more remote towns where contact between humans and wild animals is more frequent. Some efforts were in the towns and villages, and others were in labs with the viruses. The most benign current, "How did this happen?!" theory is that someone got careless in Wuhan, got infected, and in that way brought this virus out of the lab into their social context in Wuhan, where it spread. Obviously, disease research could also be used in bio-weapons, so ...
Anyway, whether lab worker carelessness or bio-weapon (or carelessness in bio-weapon research), China has shown itself unworthy of the world's trust.
