Senate Intel Committee will vote on John Ratcliffe spy chief nomination Tuesday

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate Intelligence Committee will vote to advance the nomination of Rep. John Ratcliffe to serve as director of national intelligence.

Ratcliffe, a Texas Republican, is expected to win approval from the Senate Intelligence Committee after promising the panel to act independently of President Trump and “deliver the unvarnished truth.”

If confirmed by the Senate, which appears all but certain, Ratcliffe will take over for acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell.

Most Senate Democrats are expected to oppose Ratcliffe’s nomination.

Ratcliffe was a staunch defender of Trump while serving on the House Intelligence Committee, which under Democratic control ran the impeachment investigation.

“He is a deeply partisan cheerleader for the president,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said of Ratcliffe. “A yes man in the worst sense of the phrase. Someone who doesn't speak truth to power to the president of the United States. He tells the president what he wants to hear.”
