A group of elderly Hollywood stars, including 98-year-old Carl Reiner, is urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to support vote by mail, saying that it will allow senior citizens to vote without endangering their lives during the coronavirus outbreak. The celebrities made their appeal in a video from Defending Democracy Together, a Never-Trump Republican organization co-founded by Bill Kristol.

“Although we’re dying to vote, we’d much rather just vote and not die,” Reiner, 98, says in the video, which features appearances by George Takei, Rita Moreno, and Harry Belafonte– all of whom are over 80.

This is baloney. Absentee ballot has been there all along... What's the angle?

It sure has been so, in Calif. where they found most of these ancient critters.

Reiner and Belefonte are socialists since Karl Marx days.

But what's the play? Absentee voting already exists.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Why run ads, just hire folks to go to socialist friendly locals and start vote harvesting... Keep the ballots in a nice little office in each district and throw them out when you want to sway a close election.

Yahbut... It already does. The whole mil votes absentee... Disabled vote absentee... All you have to do is call up and request a ballot. There is no criterion other than that, and of course the normal qualifications.

Again, it's already here. So what all the emphasis?

Assuming Pelosi's bill has money in it to promote mail in voting, its probably a matter of scaling it up.

Alright. It's just weird... the tenor is one of creation, where something robust already exists.

Obviously to make sure dead people,fictional characters,illegal aliens,and cartoon characters can vote a straight Dim ticket without the hassle of being alive or being in America slowing them down.

IIRC,Belefonte took that extra step,and declared himself to be a communist back in the 60's.

I may be wrong,but IIRC,you have to be able to prove you are alive and an actual human being to cast an absentee vote.

Well alright @sneakypete ... But one could argue that potential is already there and in place as it is. That's what I mean by I don't get the play...

@sneakypete
When I was in my chair, I called em on the phone and asked them to send me a ballot. That was it. And thereafter I would get a call from them to ask if I wanted another sent at each election (to include special elections and local elections).

Now, I had obtained a disabled status, which may mean the state already knew I was alive, an actual hoomin, and disabled - and therefore deserving... I don't know. But the process was entirely painless.

Well,a case can be made that with absentee ballots they are only mailed out to registered voters,and can be kept track of via the mailing address.

AFAIK,there are NO ID or address conditions attached to mail-in votes.

Primarily because the Dims won't allow them.

@sneakypete
That much is true - As a matter of fact, they would only send that ballot to my registered address. I had asked for a special dispensation in that regard, wanting the ballot sent to my mother's house as a convenience and a safety... I could not get to the mailbox, and with caretakers only coming as needed, maybe every couple weeks, my mail would languish in the box... Even longer than that, as I really had no need for paper mail (geek, everything electronic), so everyone had a tendency for forget it....

So my mother's box, which was collected daily, was an obvious thing to do, but they denied it outright. They would send the ballot ONLY to the registered address.

I don't know that one way or the other... But that may be the thing.
It is also surprising that they are not pushing for electronic ballots... Voting online.

@roamer_1

Maybe because they would be too easy to track?

Just guessing,here.

I may not know the EXACT reason,but I DO know there IS  a reason.

The Mil votes absentee (I'd wager, the majority GOP). Maybe the disabled and elderly vote absentee, too, depending on who it is.
This isn't a push for absentee ballots, it is a push for vote by mail. Different duck, and once the hollywierd rich have it, Compton will want it too.

Because of one name. Donald Trump.

Mail-in was convenient for democrat election districts because, if properly motivated, volunteers could always put their finger on the scale for their candidates. But, now, because Hitler is on the ballot, it’s critical and a vital element of the democrats plan for taking back the White House by hook or crook.

Meh. It seems less effective than a good GOTV... I understand your point, but like i said, I don't get the emphasis.  :shrug:

I guess I don't understand the difference, or how it is appreciable. It is a mail-in ballot, one way or the other, right?

I dunno... It is a logical extension to electronic voting machines... And we know they're figgering how to jack that...

Universal vote by mail would mean the ballots are mailed to everyone, summarily.
Snag a few here and there and pad a candidate's totals, just go check the dumpsters.
Where some people won't bother, others might, over and over.
Instead of being requested by the voter like an absentee ballot, suddenly they'd be everywhere, not so much looked for nor necessarily filled out by the people they were sent to.

Ahh, I see your point... Not in the dumpster diving, which would be fairly ineffective.
But in the ubiquity and forging... Still the same as packing the ballot box, still dead people voting... Just on a broader scale.

Yep. And with the existing proclivity of the Dems to get out the dead vote and to find that extra few boxes of ballots they need as it is, it'd be like leaving a gaggle of kids to mind a candy store.
