Favourite TV and Radio Themes
« on: May 14, 2020, 04:01:35 am »
We may have done it before, but since a lot of us might be watching or listening more now in isolation . . .

I have a large old-time radio collection and The Six Shooter is my favourite radio western, bar none. (Starred Jimmy Stewart as a laconic wanderer who helped folk along the way and never shot his gaudy pistol unless he absolutely had to. Lasted one year but should have lasted more.) It was written intelligently and sensitively and without about ninety percent of the cliches that helped devolve Westerns.

The show's theme music was Charles Williams's "Highland Lament." And I've just found the 1945 recording that the producers of The Six Shooter used for its theme, so I thought it'd be a nice way to open the new thread . . . if there was a more perfect piece of music evoking lonely wandering around old West I haven't heard it yet. It's Williams himself conducting the Queen's Hall Light Orchestra . . .

Ok, I will play... The Walton's Theme song (it went through several variations over the years).

But they all were good... I like the trumpet play at the end of this ....

If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

OK, I have a rarity.  This is the Closing Credits theme for Buck Rogers in the 26th Century, vocal version. Only the first two episodes of the series had it, Season 1 Episode 3 forward had the instrumental version.

You are absolutely right! Was loads of fun to play in high school pep band. Still such a cool song!
For all you've given Lord, I stand amazed.
Salvation covers me, forever changed!
In all I could not be, You met every need!
My sin, my broken life, Your cross, Your sacrifice
My hopelessness, my shame, Your faithfulness,  Your grace
The greatest mystery, Your awesome love for me.

I have a different version on iTunes (by The Ventures) with elongated percussion solos at the beginning and in the middle.  It’s probably my favorite. Seriously cool song.

Hands up to everyone who remembers this being used in a mid-1960s Diet Pepsi television commercial (Bob Crewe, the producer for the 4 Seasons and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels,  heard it in one of the spots and cut a version of it with his own ensemble for his own label---and had an unexpected smash with it . . .)

Today's PC world, of course, would denounce it as sexist . . .

I remember first hearing it in 1967 and thinking at first that it was Herb Alpert's latest.

Seriously cool song.
I suspect that every high school marching band director in the country agrees.

That's a good take on it too.

I do remember that song. I actually listened to a lot of Herb Albert. My older brother was a trumpet player and he had a few of Herb’s albums. And I might have had a slight prepubescent crush on Herb.
