37-year-old assistant professor Bing Liu was found dead in his Elm Court home after a suspected murder-suicide on Saturday.

The Ross Township Police Department is investigating two apparently related shooting deaths. One of these was a published researcher identified as Bing Liu, said to be “on the verge” of a breakthrough in understanding the novel coronavirus, which causes the disease known as “COVID-19.”

Liu was found in his Elm Court apartment on Saturday with gunshot wounds to his head, neck, and torso. A short distance away, another man — acquainted with Liu — was found dead in his car of what appears to be a self-inflicted shot to the head. Authorities believe it was a murder-suicide, though further details remain unknown at the time of this report.

Liu, a research assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is remembered by his department in an official post to the university’s website. “Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications,” they wrote.

It's a tragedy, but I don't see any evidence that links his murder to his research and I expect the headline will prompt some conspiracy theories along those lines.  Shame on whoever wrote this piece and whoever did the editing.

Everyone seems to be trying to make this some big conspiracy - before all the facts are in - when it may have been nothing more than a lovers' quarrel.

Police: ‘Zero Evidence’ Murder Of Pitt Researcher Close To ‘Making Very Significant Findings’ On Coronavirus Was Related To His Work
May 6, 2020 at 11:53 am

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – Police say there’s “zero evidence” the death of a Pitt researcher killed in an apparent murder-suicide has anything to do with his work on coronavirus.

Dr. Bing Liu, who was killed in an apparent murder-suicide, was close to “making very significant findings” related to the coronavirus, his department at the University of Pittsburgh said. ...

According to police, the two victims knew each other. Investigators say they believe the male found in his car shot and killed the man in the Elm Court home before coming back to his car and taking his own life.

Ross Township Police released their findings on Wednesday, saying they believe the apparent murder-suicide was the result of a “lengthy dispute regarding an intimate partner.”  KDKA

I always thought it was the dims who were so big on conspiracy theories.  They sure have expounded on enough of them - Russia, Ukraine, global warming, etc.  Probably the only thing not thought of with this latest instance was French fries and coleslaw!

@mountaineer

You called it.  Hopefully, this story will quash the conspiracy theories.

Or not.  Seems conspiracy theories tend to stay alive long after they are debunked.

Rest in peace, Dr. Liu.

Coronavirus In Pittsburgh: Researcher Killed In Apparent Murder-Suicide Was Close To ‘Making Very Significant Findings’ Related To COVID-19, Pitt Says

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – A researcher killed in an apparent murder-suicide was close to “making very significant findings” related to the coronavirus, his department at the University of Pittsburgh said.

Two shootings that happened over the weekend in Ross Township appear to be a murder-suicide, according to police.

On May 2, police said 37-year-old Dr. Bing Liu was found dead in his home on Elm Court from apparent gunshot wounds to his head, neck and torso. Investigators say they now believe his death is a homicide.

Liu was a research assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, his department said on Monday.

“Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications. We will make an effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence,” the department said on its website.
