De Blasio warns of ‘dangerous’ NYC budget cuts without billions from feds
NY Post, Apr 19, 2020

Mayor Bill de Blasio continued to rattle his beggar’s cup Saturday night, warning that without a few billion in federal dollars the city would “go broke.”

The coronavirus pandemic has punched a $7.4 billion hole in the city’s budget that only Congress and the Trump administration can patch, he said in a pair of cable news appearances.

Without the aid, the mayor said, the city would have to make “dangerous” cuts.

“It means all the things that people depend on in their lives — police, fire, sanitation, education — go down the list of all the things that makes any city, any town function,” the mayor said on MSNBC.

“If you’re missing $7 billion, I assure you, you have to stop — you have to start to cut that stuff back in ways that can be very dangerous.”

As Capitol Hill negotiates the next federal relief package, de Blasio slammed Trump for being “absolutely silent” on the economic crises facing American cities.

The mayor had on Thursday proposed a drastically-trimmed, $89.3 billion budget proposal.

But in addition to a cash injection, the city also needs a national testing plan if it is to safely end its lockdown, the mayor said minutes earlier on CNN.

“I want to restart the economy, too, but if New York City and cities all over the country don’t have testing we cannot restart,” the mayor said. “If we’re going broke and we can’t provide basic services for our people, we can’t restart.”

De Blasio described the early, slow response to the virus as a result of Trump’s failure to get increase testing capacity at the onset.

“Donald Trump blew it in January, in February, in March — he did not get us testing,” the mayor said. “If he had, it could have changed the entire course of this crisis.”

Suck it up, Mayor.  Things are tough all over.  Every part of the US is going through just about the same thing.  Why should my tax dollars go to bailing out your socialist utopia?

It's not the Federal government's job to bail you out Wilhelm for your piss poor financial decisions while running (ruining) the City of New York.

WHY is this a problem for anyone that doesn't live in that cess pool?

Anybody know?

Much (maybe not enough) has been said about the crushing federal debt.  Add local and state debt and it becomes totally suffocating.  Whether we like it or not, it is ultimately on us. It is debt that will ultimately do us in.

@txradioguy

I don't understand why,but there really are people out there that need to be asked that question.

Granted, most are people who think they are going to get anything and everything they want  for free, and people that stoopid most likely can't be taught much beyond "fire hot, water wet".

Incredibly painful lessons are on the way.  Currency devaluation.  Hyperinflation.  All on the horizon.  We are burning down the village while the politicians fiddle.

I'm going outside to enjoy the day I have been given.

Yeah, probably not.

De Blasio should have noticed what was going on in New Rochelle—should have noticed the spike in hospitalizations—and realized how bad it was already getting. He turned a blind eye, and he and his officials all insisted everything was fine.

And now it's all doom and gloom, won't open 'till late summer, no large gatherings/sporting events 'til 2021, etc. He has a terrible track record on predictions.

So how many rotten apple bailouts does this make in the past 50 years?

I don't know, but...don't the socialists always want to tax the rich?   NYC has quite a few rich people.  Let deBlather hit them up for the money.  Come to think of it, isn't the mayor himself wealthy?  Let him bail out NYC.

I don't live in NYC, I'm retired on  SS and a small nest egg.  Why should I or anyone else not living in New York bail out the city?

Never been a doomsdayer, but our government has taken us to the tipping point on debt.   Yes I am concerned, this blank check, and endless credit line  won't last forever.

Back in Nov, there was a story about how Cuomo was facing a $6 billion shortfall.  That's before any of this SARS-2 stuff was known.  Look for Cuomo to lump that $6 billion into his request for more money.

I would like to think that conservatives are smart enough to recognize what is happening when the construction starts, and get out right away.

And I have no sympathy for the people who didn't vote because Trump wasn't "conservative enough" for them. They are just as stupid as the dims, and just as guilty as Pelosi and her supporters.

I'd argue that Chinese cheap products played a significant part in hiding inflation for the last 15 years. While things like food and energy costs were going up the flood of cheap products from China gave the illusion of low inflation. That illusion may nearly be over. At this point interest rates cannot return to their long term historical averages due to the mountain of federal debt. It would consume most of the federal budget. It is a dilemma that cannot be reconciled. It is why we should have never gone down the debt road in the first place.

@DB

I disagree. It was there to see the whole time for anyone that bothered to look. Most people who did bother who were in a position to do anything about it,used it as an opportunity to cash in and cash out.

There are going to be LOTS of physical assets for sale soon at a dime on the dollar.

I am not going to be hurt like many people because I was smart enough to be lucky, and my house and practically everything I own,I own outright.

I truly feel sorry for 20-somethings and 30-somethings that are trying to start and raise families, and just starting to climb that long ladder to financial independence. LOTS of people are going to lose everything they have invested in as far as things like property and assets goes, and this includes any retirement funds they may have paid into that will be going bankrupt.

People in their 50's and 60's getting ready for retirement will be taking a big hit too,but at least most of them won't be trying to raise and send children off to college,or making big house payments they can't possibly refinance.

Uhh,  Reichsfuhrer Wilhelm, maybe if you had shut down the subways you could have saved a lot of lives.

But hey, when you're a Democrat, nothing is your fault.

I suspect in NYC that would be akin to "putting the sun out". The natives would be rioting.
