March employment data shows Texas economy shed most jobs in single month since Great Recession

Texas employers shed 51,000 jobs in March, the biggest single-month decline since the Great Recession of 2007-09, the U.S. Labor Department said Friday.

Beginning in early March, large conferences and other events in Texas were called off as the coronavirus pandemic took hold. As infections increased, local officials  shut down bars, restaurants and other non-essential businesses, and ordered residents to stay at home.

The Houston region also saw job losses mount in March, with employers reporting that the local economy shed 18,200 jobs compared with February.
