I can remember when it was illegal to buy margarine in Wisconsin. My parents would drive down to Rockford to buy it by the case an' smuggle it into the state.

My mother used get margarine from Iowa from a neighborhood friend who would go down there a get load.
I remember my mother kneading the coloring into the stuff.
I HATED!!! margarine.

It was easy tell the difference in the taste on everything. Even in my mother's usually great baked goods.
Finally, in the mid-sixties my father started making a little more money, and we could eat butter again.
Probably about the time they legalized margarine in Wisconsin.
They've improved the taste, but I still much prefer butter.
