The worst part is that there was so much fear over this virus that state and local authorities were hesitant to even open up the tornado shelters, lest people gather in one place en masse.

For all the lives saved when the Jonesboro tornado a couple weeks ago swept through that mall, these policy decisions may have very well caused more harm than good in Mississippi.

The wind storm is supposed to hit us today; power could potentially go out. (I don't think we in the hills are at high risk; we expect some strong gusts but nothing too damaging.)

Severe storms that left at least 14 people dead and parts of the South reeling from tornadoes that destroyed hundreds of structures are moving north, with more than 150 million people under a wind advisory or warning.

Mississippi was among the state's hardest hit by Sunday's storms. Seven people were confirmed to have died as a result of severe weather in the state, with at least 10 counties reporting damage, a spokeswoman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said.

At least five people in Murray County, Georgia, died from the storms moving through the state, Murray County Fire Chief Dewayne Bain told CNN.  ...

The storms left more than 860,000 customers in those states without power Monday morning, according to poweroutages.us.

The storm system brought severe weather first to Texas on Saturday and moved east, bringing forecasts of tornadoes, strong winds and hail the size of tennis balls or larger for Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. ...

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Severe weather has swept across the South, killing at least 18 people and damaging hundreds of homes from Louisiana into the Appalachian Mountains. Many people spent part of the night early Monday sheltering in basements, closets and bathroom tubs as sirens wailed to warn of possible tornadoes.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee area and several counties in northwest Georgia appeared to be particularly hard-hit. At least 14 people were hospitalized in the Chattanooga area, where search and rescue teams from at least 10 fire departments were going door to door responding to more than 300 emergency calls for help, the fire department said.   ...
