Sen. Bernie Sanders claimed President Trump will use relief package money to buy off swing states to vote for him in the 2020 presidential election.
"If you think that during a campaign, you’re not going to see a lot of money from the Trump administration going to battleground states, to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, you would be grossly underestimating the venality of this president," the Vermont independent said Friday on Bill Maher's HBO show.
"It is literally beyond comprehension. We have a president who has done so much harm in this entire process," he added when Maher claimed Trump was sending aid to Florida "but not here to California or Illinois or Massachusetts."
Despite Maher's claim, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has praised Trump's "proactive" help with his state during the coronavirus pandemic. "I’m not doing it to kiss the ring, I’m not doing it in a way, you know — I’m just being forthright with the president. He returns calls, he reaches out, he’s been proactive," Newsom said Friday about the president.
