Waters: Trump ‘Ignored’ Early Warnings on Coronavirus — He Has ‘Gotten Away with a Lot of Lying’

Saturday on MSNBC, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) accused the federal government of having a late response to the coronavirus pandemic and blamed President Donald Trump for ignoring early warnings.

Waters said, “It’s just it’s a problem that we have basically because we started late in the United States of America. As you know, we had an office of pandemic affairs basically in the office of the president that was shut down, closed down, not funded by the president of the United States. That’s the kind of office that does the planning, that anticipates, that makes sure that supplies and everything that’s needed can be readily available when you have this kind of disaster. And so even though we didn’t have that kind of planning in addition to that, the early notifications I’m told were ignored.”

She added, “I know that the president has gotten away with a lot of lying about what is going to happen with the Defense Act, and he said that he was going to, first of all, invoke it. He did not. He waited until the heat was on him, and then he lied on some of the big businesses that he said he had an agreement with that he really didn’t have. So the Defense Production Act is extraordinarily important to put in place by those that can give us the supplies that we need.”

In response to the travel ban, Schumer tweeted on Feb. 5, “The premature travel ban to and from China by the current administration is just an excuse to further his ongoing was against immigrants. There must be a check and Balance (sic) on these restrictions.”

In January, Biden also criticized as xenophobic the administration’s travel ban to China as the outbreak began to worsen, although it was instrumental in preventing an outbreak in the United States much sooner.

Guiding Trump’s response is a hardheaded nationalism. The response to the novel coronavirus, including recent travel restrictions, has happened more quickly than in past epidemics -- and from a public health standpoint, that could be a good thing, he says. "Historically a lot of these border security measures have used public health as a pretext for discrimination. It's very easy to see how a public health rationale would be used to limit immigration for whatever reason," he says. I have to admit I haven't read the article, nor will I.

I saw Maxine "Waters" and "a Lot of Lying" in the title, and it brought a smile to my face.

That was enough...

So did a lot of people. Especially in New York City.

I read yesterday morning that the R₀ for this disease in Seattle, where the virus first took root, was closer to 1.4 instead of the 2+ it's been estimated elsewhere, mainly because Seattle culture is already incredibly distant as it is, so it gave a false sense that the disease wasn't as contagious or virulent as originally feared.
