 Predictions: What Will America Look Like After The Wuhan Coronavirus?

What will be the long-term impact of the Wuhan virus on the economy, higher education, homeschooling, jobs, Congress, and American politics as we know it?

As readers of The Transom and listeners to my various media hits know, I have been generally critical of the media coverage of the Wuhan coronavirus (which I believe was far more interested in engendering panic than informing the public, and has now moved on to covering for China’s regime), the administration’s early insufficient response (particularly the botched early testing approach followed by the slowness of the FDA to recognize the need to relax regulations), and now the ongoing and desperate Congressional stimulus “process” (which amounts to quick, quick, put the money printer by the window). What I haven’t been doing is making predictions, in part because it is a particularly odd moment when belief that 250k-400k Americans will die in the coming year from this virus makes you an optimist.

So flush with cash off of betting David Frum that Tulsi Gabbard would not run third party in 2020, let’s try that today. As a frame for this, it would be very useful for you to listen to Russ Roberts and Tyler Cowen discuss their perspective on the coronavirus, particularly the final third of the podcast, where they put on their futurist hats and look into the crystal ball.

Hopefully, we will stop wasting, paying for college degrees that will not result in a job, etc.
Accurate, truthful and complete Information dissemination channels need to be established and validated.

Manufacturers will stop this just-in-time production crap that the universities shoved down our throats and have backup inventory so we don't have shortages of vital goods waiting for an anemic production line gears up.
Online education capabilities need to be established and maintained for primary education so it can be activated.

Good article.  Hopefully America will come to fully realize its dependency on China has been a detriment and we MUST be a country where made in the U.S.A. is something to be proud of.  Trump was absolutely correct in his assessment of unfair trade practices with China AND he must encourage big pharma to manufacture the drugs we need here. If re-elected, I believe this will become a reality.

Businesses are typically taxed on that inventory sitting on a shelf. The more sitting on the shelf the bigger the tax outlays without the income to pay it.

I would guess they had a week or two of masks in stock. The demand now is likely many years worth of production. Same with respirators and ventilators.

Depends.

A city dweller who doesn't have to live in or near a big city might decide its time to leave the environs and live in the country.  Less dependency, less taxes, more available food, cheaper, less pollution, and everyone drives bigger and more comfortable vehicles, especially as gas prices are relatively cheap.

These types will enjoy more, not less freedom.
