New York City shutting down schools due to coronavirus

The nation's largest school system will begin to shut down this week in response to the coronavirus.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday that public schools would shut down in New York City in an aggressive effort to stem the spread of COVID-19 cases. He had been pressured to close schools for days as cases of the coronavirus in the city grew.
“I’m very, very concerned that we see a rapid spread of this disease, and it’s time to take more dramatic measures,†de Blasio said Sunday. “This is a decision I have taken with no joy and a lot of pain.â€
De Blasio faced widespread criticism from local officials and teachers planning a "mass sickout" for refusing to close schools in the Big Apple.
