Attack in Kabul kills at least 27 people, wounds dozens

KABUL (Reuters) – Gunmen attacked a ceremony in Kabul on Friday, killing at least 27 people in the first major attack on the Afghan capital since the United States reached an agreement with the Taliban to withdraw U.S. troops.
The Taliban, the largest Islamist militant group in Afghanistan, said in a statement they were not involved in the attack. A top Afghan political leader, Abdullah Abdullah, was present at the event but escaped unharmed.

At least 27 people were killed and 29 wounded in an attack at a ceremony in the Afghan capital Kabul. The High Peace Council Chairman, Mohammad Karim Khalili, was forced to flee as the incident erupted while he made a speech.

Tensions have risen in the country in recent weeks, as Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive of the Unity Government, has challenged the results of the September 2019 presidential election which elected the incumbent Ashraf Ghani. Abdullah also declared victory. His spokesman said that Abdullah was present at Friday’s ceremony, but escaped unharmed.

Eyewitness footage from the scene shows former Vice President Khalili interrupted during a commemoration ceremony for the killing of Abdul Ali Mazani, a leader of the predominantly Shia Hazara ethnic group in 1995.

Peace isn't possible with the devil.  I remember the UN and their failed, over and over peace deals with Al Bashir and the Janjaweed.  They still don't have peace.  You can't have peace with people who want to exterminate people.  Cut them up.  Rape their women.  poison their wells.  Its the same with the Taliban.

We shouldn't be pretending that we will leave Afghanistan in peace.  Leaving will seal the deal for extremists who will quickly take over and it will be a complete loss and humanitarian mess.
