There have been stories floating around DC for some time that the president, to add some excitement and drama to his campaign, will drop Mike Pence as vice-president and seek another candidate who brings more raw star power to the ticket.

Nobody is upset with Pence or thinks he is doing a bad job. But Pence himself will be the first to admit that he isn’t exactly a high voltage kind of guy. Also, with the Democrats very possibly putting a woman on their ticket, the GOP may feel the need to token up themselves.

Up until this week that scenario has been limited to DC happy hour chatter and Hill staffer speculation. But right after CPAC ended Sunday, the word went forth from more than one GOP source that this scenario was under active consideration, with Pence’s full blessing, by the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the White House.

Trump would be a real fool if he ditched Pence.  Pence has done an admirable job as VP.  In his role as the "big guy" in this coronavirus outbreak, he has taken charge and has represented the Trump administration well -- certainly far better than even Trump himself.  Above all, Pence has been loyal, and it seems Trump values loyalty to himself more than any other qualification.    Why would he want to let Pence go or put him in some other job?

Who knows whether there's anything to this, but I certainly see no obligation on Pence's part to sign up for two terms. He certainly is free to choose his own path. It's not a matter of Trump's loyalty or lack thereof.

IIRC, Nikki Haley was the best UN Ambassador the US has had since Jeanne Kirkpatrick, belaboring the UN when belaboring was needed. She represented SC in the House for three terms and then was Governor of SC for 6 years, leaving to serve  the US in the UN. She has a lot more substance, IMO, than does David Leach, whoever he is.

I think Haley on the ticket would be a spectacular move.   I think she's the future of the party, and getting her on the ticket now would be a coup.   I say this with due respect for Mike Pence,  who can and should be moved to a senior Cabinet position.
