Trump urges pharmaceutical executives to accelerate coronavirus vaccine efforts

President Trump on Monday said he is urging pharmaceutical executives attending a White House meeting to accelerate their efforts to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus.

"We’ve asked them to accelerate whatever they’re doing in terms of a vaccine," Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with the president of Colombia.

The president and members of the White House coronavirus task force are scheduled to host pharmaceutical executives at 3 p.m. It's unclear which executives will be in attendance.


Trump said the meeting was previously arranged to discuss drug pricing as the White House and Congress weigh legislation aimed at curbing costs.

"But now we’re going to make another subject, and that'll be probably the first subject and that has to do with the vaccine and how are they doing," Trump said.

There's at least one experimental vaccine that has been submitted for testing. BUT, that won't start until April, and the testing is supposed to take about a year. I think there is room for improvement on the part of the FDA, as well, though risks do need intelligent management.

As a private citizen and presidential candidate, Donald Trump was a proponent of vaccine skepticism — ignoring the scientific consensus on stuff like how vaccines don’t cause autism. As president, he is now surrounded by experts on the subject, including on Monday when he held a coronavirus roundtable with his task force and the heads of several pharmaceutical companies.

Yet despite the increasingly scary situation involving the disease and preparations having been underway for weeks, he still appears rather clueless on the subject.

At the event Monday, Trump peppered the drug companies with questions that were some variant of “How fast can you get it done?” But despite this having been a focal point in recent weeks, he still didn’t seem to process the fact that producing a vaccine means conducting months and months of trials before it can be deployed. He even at one point asked whether the flu vaccine could be used to combat coronavirus.

Just to nit-pick, it is 9 weeks, Dec 31st until now.

Actually, thanks for the correction. I think the list elucidates why Trump, reasonably or unreasonably, spurred the execs on. Just one of six experimental vaccines has been submitted for trials, and one of four possible treatments. That said, I think there may be room for FDA trials to be handled more expeditiously.
