OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Transporting American astronauts to the moon by 2024 and later to Mars as fast and safely as possible will require expertise in the nuclear space sciences, a synthesis of nuclear engineering and aerospace disciplines. So will ensuring productive explorations of the solar system.

No wonder Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with its experts on nuclear reactors, radioisotope power systems and radiation, continues to play a key role in supporting the space exploration projects of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Michael B. Smith, a researcher in ORNL’s Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division, described some of the lab’s past and present space-related projects during a recent lecture hosted by Friends of ORNL.
