Colombia Upholds Abortion Laws as Legalization Battle Shifts to Argentina
Both countries have become the focus of activists working to loosen Latin America’s strict laws against the procedure

BOGOTÁ, Colombia—Colombia’s top court Monday opted not to expand abortion rights but campaigners for the procedure now look to Argentina, where the new leftist president said he will propose a legalization bill to Congress by next week.

Both countries have become the focus of abortion legalization activists working to loosen Latin America’s strict laws against the procedure. But the effort in Colombia has for the moment been put on ice after magistrates of the Constitutional Court here voted 6-3 against a motion brought by the justice handling the case, Alejandro Linares, that sought to lift all restrictions on abortion through 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Arguing that abortion decriminalization was out of the purview of the court, the decision by the judges for now keeps intact a 14-year-old law here that permits abortion in three cases: rape, fetal abnormality or health risks to the mother.

US conservative groups ramp up influence in Colombia in midst of abortion debate

Yerlin Pineda stood outside an abortion clinic in Colombia’s capital city for four hours, praying the rosary and reading biblical texts with a small group of men and women.

She’s a volunteer for 40 days for Life, an international movement that started in Texas in 2007, and now conducts vigils outside abortion clinics in more than 60 countries.

The movement claims that its protests have helped to shut down 106 abortion clinics around the world. And it has been ramping up activities in Colombia — where, on Monday, March 2, the constitutional court reviewed the option of giving women full access to the procedure until the fourth month of pregnancy — but ultimately decided to table the vote.

I've said before, at least for Nicaragua, as bad as somewhere like that is, those countries prohibit abortion. It may well go through in Argentina.

Panam Post, what a beacon of conservatism they are.

The Murder of Juanse: Seven-Month Baby Aborted in Colombia
The Constitutional Court has opened the doors for a genocide. In Colombia, a woman can say she feels sad, and then she has "the right" to kill her child
Opinion Colombia Featured

I shouldn’t be writing this story. Juanse should have been born and enjoyed the love of his father, a man who fought until the last minute so that his baby, seven months in the womb, would not be killed.

Upon learning that his former partner was attempting to abort, Juan Pablo Medina immediately filed a complaint with the Colombian Attorney General’s Office and a guardianship action, asking for provisional protection measures for his child because the baby’s life was clearly in imminent danger. He also started a media campaign publicizing his case in an attempt to stop the mother’s plans or get practical legal help.

What Juan Pablo asked his ex-partner was to let her baby, seven months in the womb, be born and give it to him; he would take care of the child forever. The young man demanded that his baby not be killed. However, nothing worked, and unfortunately, today, we have to tell this heartbreaking story to try to convince other mothers that killing a child will never be a “solution,” and to demand that the Colombian justice system, as well as the Congress and the government, stop the murder of babies being carried out by institutions like Profamilia.
