An article published on the Al-Monitor news website has suggested that an airstrike that killed dozens of Turkish soldiers in Syria’s Idlib province was carried out by two Russian jets and that the death toll was actually between 50 and 55, citing local sources.

“According to local sources contacted by Al-Monitor, two Russian Sukhoi Su-34 and two Syrian Su-22 fighter jets had launched intensive bombings of Turkey-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) targets in southern Idlib at around 11 a.m. that day. The same jets hit the Turkish convoy in coordinated action, the sources said,” Metin Gürcan, a former Turkish military advisor, wrote on Al-Monitor.

Turkish officials on early Friday announced 33 troops were killed in Syrian shelling in Idlib.

Russia Sends Warships as Turkish Troops Killed in Syria

Russia is sending two warships equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles to the Mediterranean Sea toward the Syrian coast amid mounting tensions between Russia, Turkey and Syria over the Syrian province of Idlib, the Russian Navy said Friday.

Turkey said Syrian government airstrikes killed 33 Turkish soldiers Thursday, bringing the death toll in Idlib to 54 Turkish soldiers this month. Turkey has sent thousands of troops and military hardware into Syria as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned of a full-scale offensive unless Russia-backed Syrian forces pulled back from Turkish observation posts in the region.
