MSNBC guest accuses host Chris Matthews of making inappropriate comments toward her
by Mike Brest
 | February 28, 2020 05:09 PM

Frequent MSNBC guest and GQ columnist Laura Bassett accused host Chris Matthews of making inappropriate remarks toward her and others.

Bassett came forward with the allegations in a new column titled "Like Warren, I Had My Own Sexist Run-In with Chris Matthews," which was published on Friday.

In the piece, she referenced a personal essay she wrote in 2017 in which she detailed how an older, married cable news host "inappropriately flirted" with her multiple times and made her "noticeably uncomfortable on air." In her new piece, however, she revealed the person's identity, writing, "I was afraid to name him at the time for fear of retaliation from the network; I’m not anymore. It was Chris Matthews."

According to her, Matthews made inappropriate remarks to her on two separate incidents while she was getting her makeup done before appearing on the show. In one instance, he remarked, "Why haven't I fallen in love with you yet?"

NBC Made Payment To Staffer After Sexual Harassment Claim Against Chris Matthews

Amber Athey, White House Correspondent     |     December 16, 2017

An MSNBC spokesman confirmed Saturday the company made a separation-related payment to one of Chris Matthews employees after the woman complained about sexual harassment.

Two sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Caller that Matthews paid $40,000 to settle with an assistant producer on his show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” in 1999 after she accused him of harassment. An MSNBC spokesperson contested that claim to the Caller, saying the company instead paid significantly less as part of a severance package.

The woman complained to CNBC executives about Matthews making inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company of others.

NBC has been aware of Matthew's behavior for two decades.  Yet he remains on the air.  Go figure.

I am no Chrissy fan but it's pretty sad that calling someone beautiful or saying: "Why haven't I fallen in love with you yet?" ... has been turned into sexual harassment!!

My first law firm job was with a small, very conservative firm.  The senior partner was an older gentleman who still tipped his hat to the ladies (who does that nowadays?).  Anyway, whenever I came into the office with a new dress or a new haircut, he would always compliment me.  He did the same with the other women in the office too.  Today, this man would be accused of "inappropriate behavior.'  Pffft!

By the way, that small firm was later acquired by a much larger firm with far less class and looser moral standards.  By the time of the acquisition, the older gentleman discussed above had retired.  I'm sure if he had been around after the acquisition, he would have been appalled by the shenanigans at this larger firm.  And I think these women who complained about Matthews would have heard and seen a lot worse.

I admit to honestly being surprised. I had Chrissy pegged as a  homo or a neuter.

Those are the guys who talk and 'act out' the most, to make up for their lack of actual performance.

That is actually pretty strong. I would never say that to any woman who I was not dating or at least very good friends with.

@240B

I agree. This is ESPECIALLY true when it is a boss saying things like that to an employee. The whole "power game" image thing.

I can't stand Chrissy, but yeah.... when mere flirting constitutes sexual harassment it has gone way too far.   The snowflake generation needs a good kick in the @ss to get them woke to reality.  It's like there's a whole generation on the left that wakes up (instead) every day and anticipates finding something to be upset or outraged about.   Let them try living in a country where real harassment and oppression occurs ... so that maybe, just maybe, their pea brains might be capable of telling the difference.   :shrug:

@XenaLee

He wasn't "merely flirting". He was a married man WHO WAS HER BOSS,hitting on her in a subtle way. Most women are used to subtle "hits" like this and ignore or respond to them as it pleases them,but the whole dynamic changes when it is your boss doing it. The whole "Unequal balance of power" thing can cause a woman to wonder if she can say no and not lose her job and be blacklisted from every working a similar job. For some people losing a job is no big deal. For others,it is devastating.

And it ain't like Matthews is 18 years old and doesn't know any better.

Another episode from 2004

Ambush journalism… or my evening with caveman Chris Matthews

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 20, 2004 02:34 AM

Here’s a peek behind the cable TV curtain. It’s not pretty.

So, my publicist arranges for me to go on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews on Thursday night to talk about my recent columns on the FBI and national security profiling and my new book. Despite the show’s basement ratings, we figure it’s a good opportunity to reach out to a new audience. FOX News, with whom I have a contract, has generously allowed me to appear on some competing networks to talk about the book. Thursday was the second to the last day that I could make such appearances.

A few hours before the show, a producer calls to tell me I will be on for two segments–the first topic will be the Swift Boat Veterans, the second topic will be related to the book. Fine. This is the news business. I understand the need to go with the flow and cover the hot issues of the day. I am prepared to discuss both topics.

In a pre-interview, the producer goes over general questions about Kerry’s response to the Swift Boat vets, whether the charges will be an issue in the presidential debates, and the basic themes of my book and its implications for the current War on Terror. I am originally scheduled to be on with the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank. This was scratched and I am informed at the last minute that the other guest will be former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown.

As I am seated at the table with Matthews, who I am meeting for the first time, he cracks a joke–and not in a well-meaning way–about how I look. (There are quite a few people who are hung up on this.) “Are you sure you are old enough to be on the show? What are you? 28?” I grit my teeth. He badgers me again with the same question. I politely answer his question and supply my age.

(I wonder how Matthews’ wife, the respected TV journalist Kathleen Matthews, who hosts a show about working women, would react if informed about her husband’s treatment of a fellow female journalist. I’ve been in the business a dozen years and would be happy to talk to Mrs. Matthews about my firsthand experience with Neanderthal chauvinism in the workplace.)

Needless to say, things went downhill, fast and loud, from there.  .  .  .

You know Pete....   The left wing makes fun and chides VPOTUS Pence for insisting that he is not alone with a woman, even for business.  Sexual Harassment is reprehensible, but anyone who claims that men are guilty of said claims 100.00% of the time are delusional.  The Metoo thing has rightfully generated some needed paranoia.

@catfish1957

IMNSHO,Pence is doing the smart thing. I would do the same thing if I were still working and in a management position today. I have personally seen women pull the old "bait and switch" routine to get promotions back when I had a civil service job. ANYBODY seeing and hearing them go though their routines,usually started in public,was aware of what was going on,but the female complainer ALWAYS got the benefit of the doubt because the office manager was terrified some of the fall out would fall on HIS shoulders and keep HIM from getting promoted in the future.

I knew of one black woman in her 40's that was a nothing GS-5 that got herself promoted into a GS-6 job SOLELY because she threatened to sue on racial discrimination grounds as a member of the NAACP if she didn't. There wasn't even an opening for a GS-6 in the section,but they still promoted her and gave her an office and a phone with no work to do and nobody to supervise. Which tells me that another section DID have a need for a GS-6 supervisor that never got filled because she was from another section and got the promotion anyhow. And this was in the late 70's. I can only imagine how predominate it is today.

ANY male in ANY sort of supervisory position that meets with a female behind a closed door without witnesses these days is a fool.

And it happens in the opposite direction as well. I worked with a female manager that was constantly making suggestive or lewd comments to both men and women. Finally fired after she made a racist comment to a minority employee.
