One of Sen. Bernie Sanders' main campaign promises is to end greed, but "Clinton Cash" author Peter Schweizer, whose new book is about corruption among progressives, is claiming that the Vermont independent has been funneling campaign cash to his wife Jane and her media buying company for years.
"This goes back to the 1980s when Bernie was mayor of Burlington, Vermont," Schweizer, the author of "Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America's Progressive Elite," said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" Wednesday. "One of the first things he did is he put his then-girlfriend Jane on the payroll."
The city council objected but Sanders ignored them, said Schweizer, "and that began this pattern of steering money, taxpayer money and campaign money, to his family."
Jane Sanders set up a media buying company that was registered to their home in Vermont, said Schweizer, and started doing media buying for her husband's campaign, even though "she had no background in advertising or media buying."
"The dirty little secret is when you do a media buy the buyer is entitled to a commission of 10% to 15%," said Schweizer. "It can be quite lucrative. We know that at least $150,000 was funneled to Jane Sanders this way."
