A Harvard University professor arrested by federal authorities Tuesday is being accused by the U.S. government of lying to officials about his ties to a Chinese school and program aimed at furthering the communist superpower’s “scientific development, economic prosperity and national security.”

Charles Leiber, who chairs the prestigious school’s Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department, was taken into custody at his office. He has been charged with one count of making a materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statement – and was set to appear Tuesday in federal court in Boston, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Massachusetts.

“Unbeknownst to Harvard University, beginning in 2011, Lieber became a ‘Strategic Scientist’ at Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) in China and was a contractual participant in China’s Thousand Talents Plan from in or about 2012 to 2017,” a statement from the Office says.

 Uncomfortable stuff here, at least they busted this guy at Harvard... WSJ has more, calling him the head of the department....

Above article: "....chairs the prestigious school’s Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department", so maybe that's what that means.

I thought maybe this was more important than just "health and education", posting it here.

Federal investigators also determined that Lieber was awarded more than $1.5 million to establish a nanotechnology research lab at WUT.

“China’s Thousand Talents Plan, according to the complaint (is) a Chinese government-run program designed to entice scientists and researchers in the United States to share their research expertise with China,” said U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling.

Simultaneously, Lelling said, Lieber was receving U.S. grant funds from the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health.

Lieber is accused of making false statements about his connections to China on National Institutes of Health grant applications. Lelling said those programs required Lieber to disclose if he was working with any foreign power.

The grant processes and profs receiving grants need some scrutiny, IMO.

After discussing the Lieber indictment, this news article continues:

... The second indictment is a Chinese national who was working as a researcher at Boston University. Lelling said Yanqing Ye is a lieutenant of the Chinese military, but failed to disclose that while applying for a U.S. visa. Ye is currently in China and has not been arrested.

“A border search of her electronic devices showed that Ye had complied information for the People’s Liberation Army about two U.S. residents with expertise in robotics and computer science,” said Lelling.

Boston University said Ye left the school in April 2019 and they are fully cooperating with the investigation.

The third indictment is Chinese national Zaosong Zheng who was sponsored by Harvard and working as a researcher at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He was allegedly caught at Logan Airport in December trying to smuggle biological material out of the country.  ...

Espionage against America’s universities surfaced again when the FBI arrested a prominent Harvard professor as an alleged part of a Communist Chinese spy operation.

The recent arrests of Harvard Professor Charles Lieber, a Chinese People’s Liberation Army officer, and a second Chinese national in Boston, show that Beijing – among others – uses American academic institutions to steal technology and more.

Some professors seem perfectly willing to collaborate with the Chinese Communist Party.

Sounds to me that this has more to do with the professor's embrace of communism, than it does with China per se...

You may be right, all this time I was thinking about how bad it was to have China infiltrate our colleges, but with good commies like this, perhaps it is "so called" secular commies in our own academia that is the problem actually helping the destruction of America. Millions funding China research using tax payer's hard earned money.

She didn't "embrace communism". She is a Chinese citizen and an officer iin the Peoples Liberation Army.
