Democrats mull Cruz proposal to trade John Bolton impeachment testimony for Hunter Biden

Some Senate Democrats are considering accepting a proposal first voiced by GOP Sen. Ted Cruz to trade witnesses in President Trump's impeachment trial.

Cruz proposed what he called "witness reciprocity" to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was receptive to the idea, last week as a potential means to secure testimony from Hunter Biden. Several Senate Democrats are now considering embracing the proposal in order to get former national security adviser John Bolton to testify in the trial, according to the Washington Post.

Bolton has said he is willing to testify in the Senate trial if subpoenaed. The Democrats weighing Cruz's proposal believe that Bolton, with firsthand knowledge of Trump's dealings with Ukraine, is worth hearing from even if Republicans plan to call former Vice President Joe Biden or his son to testify over alleged corruption.

Senate Democrats are dismissing chatter about attempts at an agreement that would guarantee former national security adviser John Bolton testifies in President Trump's impeachment trial in exchange for former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden also testifying.

The idea has been floated by conservatives, who argue there should be "witness reciprocity." But Democrats shot down such talk, saying Trump allies are demanding an irrelevant witness in exchange for one with first-hand knowledge of Trump's actions.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), asked about a potential swap, argued that "witnesses should have something to do with and direct knowledge of the charges against the president."

Biden is hardly irrelevant, not when the Dems have accused the President of a corrupt motivation.   Corruption doesn't get a free pass just because the ones alleged to be engaging in it happen to be the former Vice President of the United States and his drug-addled son.

I believe a whole lot of ordinary voters actually share Trump's desire that we get a full explanation of exactly what Hunter Biden was doing, and what role his dad played in that.  I mean, it just looks like it stinks.

IF Warren or for that matter Sanders wanted to get Biden off their backs and take the lead, they should be asking him to explain.  They are probably aware of his involvement (or at least suspect); or would they rather keep quiet in order not to smear the party?

Nope, they will never agree to this.  A simple subpoena would have already yielded Bolton's testimony.  But they already know that it will not help their case.  As any good lawyer, Cruz already knew how they would respond to the offer before making it.
